Your child has the opportunity to sign on to participate in a new and exciting children's Web site, ROSCOE's Recycle Room. ROSCOE (an acronym for Recycle Our Steel; Conserve Our Environment) is the official spokescan of the Steel Recycling Institute. But first, we want to explain to you what the site is all about.

When your child signs on, his or her name will NOT be used on mailing lists or for any purpose other than to track site usage. We are, however, running an ongoing "contest" through which your child earns points toward having his or her name (first only) placed on the "honor roll." These points are earned in two ways: the number of people he or she gets to answer the recycling question featured on this launch site, and the points accrued in games within the site.

The site itself provides fun and interesting ways for your child to learn about steel recycling and solid waste management. The site is targeted to children ages 8 to 13; however, younger children may view the site without parental concern about its content.

Here are the site elements:

  • Funny Face ROSCOE: children can "rearrange" ROSCOE's face.
  • Brand the Can: while cans pop up from holes in a grid, children get to "brand" the can with the recycling logo and watch it turn into other steel products (which is what happens when steel cans are recycled).
  • Recycling is Right: a quiz game that allows children to answer recycling questions and earn points which accumulate for the "honor roll" mentioned above.
  • Chalk Board: a monitored area for children to discuss their thoughts and opinions on recycling.
  • Show What You Know: a monthly question posed on this launch page.
  • ROSCOE's Laboratory: activities that children can work on by simply downloading the file.
  • Volunteer Profile: A young volunteer will be profiled from time-to-time to highlight his or her outstanding positive contribution to the local community and the environment.

I hope you'll share a few minutes with your child going through this site. Who knows, you may learn something!
